45 Visiting the hairy coos - Whistler May 19th

Whistler

Highlights

Hunting the hairy coos

A relaxed welcome to life on the land rather than the ocean. Taking a while to adjust our balance to not being in a ship - we are both experiencing a few little "sways" as you sort of think the floor is rocking and have a little over balance. Unless of course there are earth tremors here....

It is a long weekend in Canada and the weather presented us with blue skies.

Breakfast was a "normal" - phew, feeling relief at that. So satisfying to take that eating down a notch so it was an apple and juice for @Mac and vegemite toast for me - with the fullstop of our usual 10.30 coffee. Absolute bliss.

Don't mind a drive for views of Mt Currie

Today’s adventure was a 35 km drive to #Pemberton. We are willing participants on this drive and enjoy heading out into the farming community because it is home to the "Red Barn" - the location of @Mindy and @Ian’s wedding. Always enjoy a view of that rural setting, complete with jersey cows and the snow capped background of #Mt Currie. Plenty of opportunities for views on the mountain drive - steep cliffs, rugged peaks topped with glistening white snow, milky green glacier fed lakes, fast running shallow rivers and their associated white boulders and green green green trees and under growth. Clouds were zipping in and out of the ridges - one minute it was clear skies and the next menacing grey storm clouds racing almost within reach, low across the sky.

It is such a beautiful place.

Lots of families out today - plenty of bike riders, canoeists, stand up paddle board riders, bikers, picnickers and horse riders. Seems like any hint of sun has everyone out.

The draw card - two little calves

Our destination and proposed activity schedule was a little tamer than all thw outdoor enthusiasts we had passed on the way. We were heading to a property called "The Beer Farmers." We have been here before - last year it was for the sunflower maze. Today it was to see the "Hailen Coos," more affectionately known as the "hairy coos” or translated … the Scottish Highland Cows.

Remnants of the tulips and our "swing" from the sunflower maze. Notice how low the clouds are - they race by

How clever is this little farm setup? They are brewers but to ensure that constant stream of crowds - there’s always something featured. Just missed the Mother’s Day tulip walk and I know that last year there was a Halloween setup, the sunflower maze and they are part of the food ride. Today, it was these two little calves.

Moo - oo- ooo - just needed to be patient - they eventually joined us

We had arrived right on opening time and for the first 20 minutes had these hairy little beasts to ourselves. At first, they were in the distance. We just waited quietly and eventually they came over to the fence and were more than happy to have four humans pulling up the juicy grassy offerings from outside their enclosure line — the grass is always green on the other side. They were little eating machines and greedily accepted our offerings.
Once the children numbers started to arrive and congregate - felt we had to hand over the baton (reluctantly) to the next feeding crew. Sort of embarrassed into it because the first group to arrive were children from @Mindy’s school — could hardly be “coo hogs.”

We were all in on the act - they had us working hard

No worries - did a little snacking ourselves. Enjoyed the brew offerings of the “Beer Farm” before heading out and making a little detour on the way home to the #Pemberton Nursery.

Enjoying a local brew

Needed to get a few hints on gardening in the gravelly acidic soil of #Alpine Meadows from the local experts. Bundled a little collection of recommendations together as the first part of our gardening project and made our way home through intermittent light showers. We had been fortunate enough to enjoy all of our outdoor adventures rain free. Mind you, the rain doesn’t seem to worry the #Canadians, they just put on another layer and keep on doing whatever it was they were doing before it rained.

Got a few starters

It was a late slow dinner at home, but with that done it was the launch of the "Five Crowns" challenge. Took us all of 10 minutes to introduce the rules of the game to the locals - and we were away! Played two rounds- that’s 26 hands - and I am pleased to announce I am the undisputed #Queen of night one’s challenge. But I think they are catching on - might not be that way in future rounds.

Keeping the score card going - two nil to @Jan

Weather: 14 — sunshine, with intermittent showers

Steps: 4 103
