33 Snooze you lose - Trans Pacific May 7th

 North Pacific Crossing

Highlights

8.30 trying for a sunset shot - cheers anyway

Still winding that clock forward and it was a little bit of an inconvenience because for whatever reason I slept in till 10.50! Oh dear. Only managed to wake up because @Mac rattled a couple of cupboards and drawers because we wanted to be in the #Theatre for the 11.15 Part 2 of the #Whale presentation.

And it is a case of "snooze you lose." It had snowed this morning (well there were snow flakes across the deck) and @Mac had spotted the first whale spout of the adventure.

First flurry excitement

That meant we were coming out of that venue right on noon and the @Captain was on the loud speaker reminding us to wind those clocks forward another hour. I had literally been present and accounted for, for a grand total of one hour and ten minutes and it was already 1 pm! May 8th somehow just slipped on by.

Did enjoy our session with the @Ship Naturalist for the next round of whale talk.

Of course, had to head to @Concerto for lunch and had plenty of gap fillers to make up for the missed breakfast. Really just flitted around for a few hours - visited the library to collect some daily puzzles and checked out the jigsaw before venturing out to Deck 16 to see what the conditions were like for our later meetup.

Finding extra layers

We really only had time to run back to the room and find our extra layers to meetup with about 100 other enthusiasts for group whale watching. Yes, it was cold, but @Mac tucked into an absolute hotspot of internet connectivity to do some strategic work in his game and I pulled up a railing and chatted with others as we hooted with excitement each time a whale put on a show for us. No breaching. No flippers. But we were giddy with excitement at the 14 spouts we picked near and far. Great having so many pairs of eyes doing the work - definitely got bang for our buck.

Finding solutions for after whale watching - the Captain's Bounty did the trick

Also got our name down on the Northern Lights call list. A little chance that we may see them as we approach #Whittier (more chance once we trek south towards Vancouver.) The plan is - you share your cabin phone number and if @Rob or the Bridge Crew spot them during the wee hours of the morning - you will get a call. Fingers crossed.

Lots of opportunities to catch up on deck

When we got back to the stateroom, there were flakes of snow flying across rhe deck again. @Allan had mentioned earlier in the day that he hadn’t seen snow and really wanted to. Needless to say, I was keen for him to experience rhe little flurry. Opened the door to the hallway and stuck my head out and yelled "Emergency @Allan, emergency." That caused a flurry in the hallway. The two staff members in the hallway weren’t @Allan and they dropped what they were doing and bounded to our door. @Mac was saying to me "Stop, what are you doing?" But I just repeated it "@Allan, emergency." Had no idea of the chaos I was causing.

After being gagged and muzzled by @Mac, he reassured the running staff that everything really was fine and we eventually got cotton, short sleeved shirt @Allan on the balcony and he was less than enthusiastic about the snow and the cold. Add that to my list of #fails and a very important lesson - never yell "Emergency" in the corridor of a cruise ship.

Thawing out with frozen drink - that makes sense

Anyway, left us a bit short on time to get a drink to warm up before showering up and changing for dinner but we did make it and were seated for dinner with a slight promise of a sunset view. Of course, the clouds closed in at the 8.30 mark and just got two fiery eyes poking through.

Two firey eyes

Boycotted the entertainment again - mind you we did go to the theatre and "pop in" at 10 pm but think we had missed the introduction of the magician’s act and didn’t quite get what was happening, and instead found ourselves back in the stateroom for a nightcap. We were so excited about the prospect of getting the Northern lights call up that we piled up our layers of clothing in the sitting room - all in order of dressing - in case we needed it in the dark.

Window shopping- for wi-fi - ridiculous but it works ... sometimes

Topsy turvy day of nothing really - still cold outside - @Mac’s phone doesn’t like it when it gets cold and turns itself off or registers 1% battery life. Mind you we do spend a little time dashing around looking for some wi-fi signal — don’t mind saying that every photo that loads comes at a very “persistent” price.

Still heading towards #Alaska. Still asking what day it is. And still having a ball.

PS Our wait staff chatted with us this evening about an outbreak of AGE (Acute gastroenteritis) on the ship. Four people sick and confined to quarters - need to keep up that hand hygiene. We have been very mindful of the hand sanitisers - seems like another good reason to stay out of #Horizons. We were last in the dining room - they were sterilising everything- chairs, salt and pepper shakers, menu covers ... it was all happening.

PPS our first time in the lift with a sneezing- coughing guy today. He had a tissue stuck up his nostril held in place with one hand and a box of tissues in his other hand. Apologised as he got out of the lift and commented that it looked like he had picked up a cold .... shame he didn't have a mask on - I don't know, does that help. Anyway, we have been lucky so far - touch wood - and haven't made a dent in our pharmaceutical stock.

PPS Fingers crossed that the seas remain calm - @Mac has had a blow out in one of his sea bands  lost its elasticity. Need to buy some new ones.

Weather: 2 degrees with snow flurries
Steps: 8 843
